One of the most common questions I hear is: “How do I know if I’m ready for therapy?” For first-gen and neurodivergent folks, this question carries extra weight. Therapy can feel like a luxury, or even like something we “shouldn’t need” because “No estoy loco/a/x”, mental health isn’t talked about, or our parents didn’t have access to it. But readiness for therapy isn’t about being “broken enough”, it’s about noticing when you want something different for yourself.
You might be ready for therapy if:
You feel stuck in the same patterns, no matter how hard you try to change.
You’re carrying a heavy mental load, such as family expectations, school or work pressure, cultural guilt, or fear about changing immigration policies.
You want a space where you don’t have to explain why things feel hard, you can just be.
You’ve tried pushing through on your own, but it feels exhausting.
You want to better understand yourself and your needs.
The benefits of therapy can be life-changing. Therapy gives you a safe place to explore your identity, process trauma, manage ADHD or anxiety, and break cycles of shame. For first-gen clients, it can also be a space to hold the complexity of honoring your family while also honoring yourself. For neurodivergent clients, it can be a place to learn strategies that work for your brain, not against it.
If any part of you is wondering, “Am I ready?”; that’s your sign. Therapy doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means you’re ready to give yourself the support you deserve.
