What (you might want) to Look for in a Therapist

Finding the right therapist can feel a lot like dating — sometimes awkward, sometimes overwhelming, but so worth it when you find the right fit. The truth is, not every therapist will be the right one for you, and that’s okay. What matters is finding someone you feel safe with.
Here are some things to consider when looking for a therapist:
Cultural understanding: Do they “get it” when you talk about being first-gen, BIPOC, or neurodivergent? You shouldn’t have to constantly explain yourself or continuously mask the real you.
Approach: Do they use modalities or theories that resonate with you (like EMDR, expressive arts, mindfulness, CBT, DBT, etc)?
Accessibility: Are they affordable, flexible with scheduling, and able to meet you where you are (telehealth vs. in person)?
Connection: Most importantly, do you feel comfortable with them? Sometimes it’s not about credentials — it’s about whether you feel seen and heard.
For first-gen clients, this might mean finding someone who respects both your cultural roots and your individuality. For neurodivergent clients, this could mean choosing a therapist who understands how your brain works and adapts their approach to fit you.
The right therapist is someone who creates a space where you can be your messy, authentic self without fear of judgment.
